A trip to Madagascar wouldn’t be complete without visiting the breathtaking Avenue of the Baobabs, one of the country’s most iconic landmarks. Conveniently located near Morondava in western Madagascar, this stunning avenue is a must-see for photographers and nature lovers alike.
The best time to visit is at sunrise or sunset, when the golden light enhances the beauty of these towering trees. However, these are also the busiest times, so capturing crowd-free photos requires patience or a bit of luck! I managed to snap some great shots during a late morning drive—though the lighting wasn’t ideal, the absence of other tourists made for a peaceful experience.
Morondava itself is also worth exploring and is easily accessible by plane from Antananarivo.
Experience Life in a Vezo Village
If you love immersing yourself in local cultures, spending a day in a Vezo village is an unforgettable experience. The Vezo people, a semi-nomadic fishing community along Madagascar’s southern coast, live in harmony with the sea—their name, Vezo, literally means “to live with the sea.”
During our visit, we danced with the locals, enjoyed traditional Malagasy music, met a Malagasy healer, had our faces painted in the Masonjaony style, and indulged in delicious local cuisine. It was a rich and immersive cultural experience that highlighted the warmth and resilience of the Vezo people.
Journey Down the Tsiribihina River
For a truly adventurous and off-the-beaten-path experience, take a multi-day boat trip down the Tsiribihina River. This journey offers a deep connection with Madagascar’s stunning landscapes and local communities.
The trip typically lasts three days and two nights by motorized boat (or longer by canoe). Along the way, you’ll encounter waterfalls, natural pools, tobacco plantations, and even lemurs! Nights are spent camping along the riverbank, sharing stories around a fire, and soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings.
This adventure is perfect for those seeking an authentic and unforgettable way to explore Madagascar’s wild beauty.
